What is the meaning of life? One man knows the answer. He doesn’t know why he knows it, but he knows it. This man has lived a life so detailed and so full, so rich in sensation and experience that his existence might be called godlike if not for one thing: he is an inmate at Riker's Island. His name is Drishyam, which means “the onlooker” in Sanskrit. He is innocent of any crime when arrested for murder, even when he tells the cops that they are framing him because his wife reports abuse by them. He is not tried, tried as a criminal, but as a witness. When his testimony restores a wrongful conviction, he is released from Riker’s Lane and given a new identity. The world thinks that he has gone to meet the team that helped him and that his new life will be full of happiness and comfortable security. Everyone but Drishyam knows that the past has followed him because even in prison someone was watching over his shoulder. So what happens when Rishi (Kunwar) is released? He moves out of the small house provided by the government and into an apartment building where he meets Sita (Sushmita Sen). Sita is a law student and she is drawn to Rishi. What begins as a friendship becomes a romance that leaves her the new bride of a man who is suspicious of everyone he meets – which is just about everyone – and who seems to have something important to hide. As the life of Rishi and Sita unfolds, we will see how tight-lipped he can be about his past, but also how open she can be about hers throughout the film. The rest of their lives up until now have been indifferently lived by people who have always had what they needed from their family, from school, from the government, from society; but now they are thrown together not knowing what to expect. Rishi, for the first time in his life, will earn money. He still has a lot to learn about earning it, but he works at a car rental agency that becomes the scene of an armed robbery. Rishi is also getting used to having someone to think about while he sleeps next to them in bed; that's Sita. Sita was born into an upper middle class family with her father being a Tamilian and her mother being Bengali Hindu descent. She has done well in school and college, so well that she is accepted into law school on scholarship. The scholarship is all she has, her parents are both dead. She struggles to get by with her studies, taking on odd jobs at the local airport to help make ends meet. This is where she meets Rishi. When their romance blossoms into marriage without his wallet being empty when entering the house, Sita is persuaded that they will be able to really start their life together when he gets a stable job with a steady income. Rishi works at the car rental agency owned by Vicky (Ashish Vidyarthi) and his wife Sonia (Smita Jaykar). He knows nothing about cars but he is learning how to work on them without being told or asked for help. cfa1e77820
