Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animated television series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It first aired on February 21, 2005, on Nickelodeon as a sequel to their original series Avatar: The Last Airbender. This show has completed three seasons and four books. It is the second longest running Nickelodeon cartoon next to SpongeBob SquarePants which has been airing since 1999. This show was nominated for many awards including six Emmy Awards and one Annie Award. This show was listed as one of the best animated shows for children by IMDB and TV Guide and ranked at 15th place in IGN's top 25 animated TV shows list of 2012. Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in an Asian fantasy world where some humans have the ability to manipulate the classical elements by use of psychokinetic variants of Chinese martial arts known as "bending". The show's universe is divided into four nations, the "Earth Kingdom", the "Water Tribes", the "Fire Nation" and the "Air Nomads". Each has a distinct society, wherein people known as "benders" have the ability to control and manipulate their nation's element using martial arts. Only one person, the "Avatar", can bend all four elements. The Avatar, initially under the guise of anonymity, resolves major conflicts among the nations. Aang, a 12-year-old successor to a long line of Avatars, is missing: having been frozen in an iceberg for one hundred years. He has begun to master only airbending and must master the other three elements to defeat the Fire Nation before its armies can conquer the other nations and kill off all firebenders in a genocide which will render the element extinct. In order to save the world from this fate, Aang learns earthbending from Toph Beifong, waterbending from Katara and firebending from Zuko. These three are descendants of people who knew Aang's past life, Avatar Roku. Aang also acquires a flying bison named Appa, and a winged lemur, Momo, who becomes his close companion. Aang's quest is supported by Iroh and later Zuko who join him in his travels. The third season, "", follows Zuko and Aang as they work together to bring peace to a world left without an Avatar after the death of Sozin. This season takes place one year after the events in the second season. Aang is an Air Nomad from the Southern Air Temple, born Tenzin, who is believed to be the Avatar when he survives a massive fire that kills all but two other airbenders in his home village at the age of twelve. Aang is a natural-born bender, unlike his mother and father who learned the art from a master in a remote mountain monastery. His father, being a farmer, lives in a small village that is constantly harassed by Fire Nation soldiers who have been sent to destroy the temple that Aang's village originally built for meditation purposes. In order to protect the temple from the soldiers, Aang's father has taken an oath never to fight. Aang later learns from Iroh that his real name is Tenzin when he meets him at Mount Lanakila in search of spiritual guidance from past Avatars.
